Dr. Marleen Westerveld is a Professor in Speech-Language Pathology at Griffith University on the Gold Coast in sunny Queensland, Australia. She received a PhD in Speech-Language Therapy (Child Language) from the University of Canterbury (New Zealand) in 2007. Marleen’s research focuses on children’s spoken and written language skills needed to participate in daily activities at home, school, and in the community. Particular research interests include emergent literacy skills, language sample analysis, and (personal) narrative development and disorders.
As Chair of the IALP Child Language Committee, Marleen founded the Global TALES Network (https://osf.io/ztqg6/) in 2018. This global network of more than 40 child language researchers is interested in investigating methods for eliciting and analyzing children’s personal event narratives, with the ultimate aim of developing global tools and approaches to support interventions for this important skill in children with significant challenges in their learning, including those from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Marleen has held (guest) Editorial positions at the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research; Language, Speech and Hearing Services in Schools; Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica. She has published close to 100 peer-reviewed papers, 1 book, and 6 book chapters.
